Origin of the Shoujo Girl

Before diving into the aesthetic, we must know what a Shoujo girl is. A Shoujo girl can be many things and comes from anime and manga media. They are characters that usually appear in slice-of-life anime. There are many genres but most people base their outfits off of romance Shoujos. Shoujo girls can be described as quiet, and or shy. They are also in their teens and early twenties. In mangas, they try to overcome obstacles in their life which is the center of the story.

Characteristics and Staples

In my opinion, something that you will always see in a shoujo girl outfit is a scarf of any pattern and it brings a cozy feeling to more fall and winter-oriented outfits. Many of the Shoujo girls, like Hachi from Nana, wear scarves in almost every outfit. Influences from the 2000s are very present. There are vests and fruit motifs, Shoujo girls sometimes wear dresses over tights or jeans, and Baby-doll tees are worn on top of dresses or shirts. For pants and legwear long skirts, shorts, skirts, and flared jeans are the stars of the show. The color palette wouldn't be complete without pink or pastels. It gives that nice touch of innocence. Tights also work under short skirts. The jewelry worn is minimalist and with very girly motifs. An honorable mention is fluffy earmuffs which I think are cute, and pull together an outfit.

The appeal of The Shoujo Girl

Coquette and Barbiecore, while not the same, predicted the emergence of more feminine aesthetics like Shoujo. Many girls are reclaiming their femininity and ¨I´m Not Like Other Girls¨ trends of the 2010s are dwindling. Girls and even men are more comfortable exploring these clothes and feeling authentic in themselves. I hope the Shoujo girl grows in popularity and gives recognition to the amazing writers and artists of these mangas, and so Shoujo girl fashion can be spread to many discovering girls.
